Who we are: a grassroots, community climate support group based in eastern Australia.
We are independent and non-partisan.
Our mission:
Members meet formally and regularly with the focus on:
- supporting each other in taking personal and group climate-action projects based on our areas of expertise and interest
- keeping abreast of climate evidence and issues via guest speakers and by sharing information
- appealing to local and world leaders to act now in aiming for net-zero carbs.
ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE
Zero Carbs pay respect to the the Australian First Nations people — past, present and future. We recognise that sovereignty is yet to be ceded.
Zero Carbs focused heavily on campaigning for The Australian Indigenous Voice in the lead up to the 2023 referendum, recognising that there can be no climate justice without First Nations justice.
What can we do at a grassroots level to make a change?
Addressing climate change can often feel overwhelming, but grassroots efforts play a critical role in driving significant change. Here are a few ways individuals and communities can make a difference:
- Educate and Advocate: Become knowledgeable about climate issues and share this information within your community. Organize workshops, talks, and discussion groups to raise awareness.
- Support Local Initiatives: Participate in or start local environmental projects such as community gardens, tree planting drives, or clean-up events. These activities foster a sense of community and contribute to environmental health.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Adopt sustainable practices in your daily life. Reduce waste by choosing reusable products, recycling properly, and composting organic waste. Encourage others to do the same.
- Promote Sustainable Transportation: Opt for walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation whenever possible. Advocate for better cycling infrastructure and public transit options in your community.
- Support Renewable Energy: Advocate for the use of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Support policies and initiatives that promote clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Conserve Water and Energy: Implement water-saving techniques and energy-efficient practices at home. Simple steps like fixing leaks, using energy-efficient appliances, and insulating homes can have a substantial impact.
- Participate in Local Government: Engage with local policymakers and attend city council meetings. Advocate for policies and regulations that support environmental sustainability and reduce carbon footprints.
- Support Sustainable Agriculture: Buy locally sourced, organic produce to reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. Support farmers who use sustainable farming practices.
- Join Environmental Groups: Become a member of local or national environmental organizations. Volunteer your time and skills to support their campaigns and initiatives.
- Educate the Next Generation: Teach children about the importance of environmental stewardship. Encourage schools to incorporate climate education into their curriculum and lead by example.
By taking these steps at a grassroots level, we can collectively contribute to a more sustainable future. Every action, no matter how small, adds up to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change.
